TRMNL, Birmingham

After opening in November 2008, TRMNL is already one of the UK’s leading dance clubs. The club is based in a Victorian factory with its exposed brickwork and restored machinery creating a truly unique atmosphere.

We were approached by the developers in early 2008 and they explained that they wanted to recreate the lighting system and atmosphere of one of Germany’s leading dance venues.

At this stage the building was just a shell but through numerous site visits and lots of research we were able to provide a system that meets the exact requirements of our client.

We created a 14 metre x 2.7 metre light box which runs 12 metres along the ceiling and 2 metres down the wall at the back of the DJ booth. The ceiling has 3 different levels and due to the age of the building nothing runs true. To overcome this the nodes were mounted onto panels which were then suspended from the ceiling using a bespoke hanging and levelling system. A plinth was then fitted to the sides of the panels and a Barrisol stretch fabric was applied to form a light box with diffuser.

The system is run via a dedicated PC running the E:cue Programmer Suite and bespoke lighting effects were created for the opening night. A custom designed, on screen control panel was created to provide point and click control.

The result is a lighting system that combined with the music, creates a stunning light show which is unique in the UK.
