SNOG, SOHO
Following the overwhelming success of the first SNOG store in South Kensington, where e-luminate installed the Digital Sky, we were approached regarding the installation of the specialist feature lighting at SNOG’s second store in Soho, London.
Cinimod Studios came up with a design that was exciting and unique. It involved the use of 700 custom designed LED globes and 25 custom designed DMX controllers to create a ‘bubbling ceiling’. Control of the standard house lighting was also a requirement of the design brief. The LED globes and controllers were designed for USB connectivity, with the controller being in effect, a USB hub. Each globe had its cable terminated with a USB connector.
Due to the complexity of the installation and the high quality finish a specialist installation company was required and e-luminate was appointed to carry out the installation.
The brushed aluminium ceiling is made up from a series of brushed aluminium laminate faced MDF panels. These were designed to fit the contours of the ceiling and were scribed around columns and across the diagonal entrance wall. The panels were pre drilled to receive the bespoke LED fixtures.
The ceiling was the pre wired which involved locating 25 custom designed DMX controllers in the ceiling void and taking a USB cable to each of the 700 holes. The controllers were placed around the perimeter of each maintenance panel with future maintenance in mind.
Winches were then installed above the 3 maintenance access panels to allow these panels to be lowered and raised safely without damaging the globes. Finally, 700 80mm LED Globes were installed into the ceiling. Each globe was secured by a spring clip and its cable length was adjusted to create a completely random globe arrangement and give depth to the lighting feature.
The lighting is controlled by 3 e:cue silver butlers and 1 e:cue e:com wall mounted user interface. The standard house lighting is also controlled by the e:cue system via 2 Anytronics 4 channel dimming / switch packs.
The ceiling is capable of displaying ambient lighting effects, as well as running video files in almost any format. Custom designed lighting effects were created for different times of day to continually change the atmosphere of the store. These effects were then stored as timed events and triggered automatically using the e:com.
